Heroes

Visions of warriors ride through my head.

But how can that be? For they are long dead.

Sitting by fires the stories are told.

Heard by the young, relived by the old.


Stories of wars, the beginning of life.

Stories of heroes, of men and their wives.

Do you remember Greece, Troy and Rome?

How about Mount Olympus, where Gods called their home?


Poseidon, Aphrodite and Zeus, just to name a few.

You lived your life well so they'd show mercy to you.

Achilles and Hector are heroes of old.

The greatest story ever, well, that's what I'm told.


Now heroes wear uniforms that display their names.

And their armies are teams that merely play games.

Lives are not taken when these battles are lost,

The price for admission is the only cost.


Now heroes have names like Montana and Rice

And they make millions, and we pay the price.

But what a mere pittance, for it could be said

When millions of soldiers are infact left dead.


So I'll gladly pay salaries to these millionaires

To keep battleships docked and jets out of the air.

Although more wars are coming, it never will end,

We can only pray, we can also pretend.
