Fond Memories

Fond Memories

She planted her fond memories

beside the trellised garden wall,

and as life’s seasons passed her by

those memories grew so tall.

Through winter’s cold and April’s rain,

summer’s warmth and autumn’s fall,

although so many times were hard

she held on through them all.

She sent out her soft tendrils

 wrapping gently round the wood,

and he in turn gave her support

just like a true friend should,

providing her with structure

when the growing times were good

and a place to rest her beaten brow

when harsh storms brought the flood.

As the wheel of fortunes turned,

and in the midst of winter’s hold,

the flowers of fond memories left,

and the wood, now tired and old,

began to break and crumble

where once he’d stood so bold.

Afraid to show his weakness,

 his fears of solitude untold.

Fear not, she’d never strayed afar

she’d merely bowed her face

and with her strengthened twines of love

held him firmly, like a brace.

She sent out brand new tendrils

and as the sun resumed its place,

fond memories and a friendship grew

with such amazing grace.

Critique:Fond memories are what keep you smiling because there is nothing better than loving your people. This poem made me think of all the great times I have had in my life and how much more important they are than the bad times. It also made me think of all the great lyrics from Bill Withers, Sly and the Family Stone, and Stevie Wonder that keep me smiling everyday. I loved this piece and the writing prowess you show is undeniable. Congratulations on not only winning but creating a piece that transcends the bonds of life's adversity.

Critique:It's a beautiful poem that paints such a vivid picture. Each line is perfect in depicting a beautiful friendship that has withstood the test of time. I love how the flow is so smooth, much like those time-lapse films about nature, you see the beauty of the poem as it unfolds from one line to the next. I love the narrative form of it, you are greatly talented with it :). As one who loves to garden, I can't help but smile at how beautiful this poem is, I absolutely love the metaphor you used. I loved every line, each supported the other well. Thank you so much for sharing this poem once more, Sharon. And congratulations! You deserve to win :D!

Critique:I can just close my eyes right now and picture this poem coming to life. That is how amazing this is Sharon, that even after reading it, the words stay with you, turning into a beautiful image in one's mind--I think I mentioned before of how I could just picture your poem along side a pretty painting of a trellised garden--- It's hard to choose a favorite line, but I have to say that I loved the imagery that the second line evokes...it's truly a gem of a poem, and congratulations again for winning :D!

Critique:This is great.  It really invokes a lot of thought and has great imagery, which all of your writings have.  It really plants the story in your head.
