The Adventures of Molly Mop

The Adventures of Molly Mop

Chapter one – The Shed Door

Ten year old Molly Parker, or as her Granddad calls her “Molly Mop”, due to her long wavy mop like hair, is a keen gardener. Every Saturday she runs round to her Granddads where she stays until Sunday Evening. Her granddad is a fabulously eccentric and funny chap and his garden holds adventure of unimaginable kinds. You see before Molly’s Grandmother died she too loved taking care of her garden. Her Garden was her pride and joy and only a few special people were allowed to see it, let alone enter it. Molly was the only helper her Grandmother needed and wanted. Grandmother Parker’s favourite time of year was the spring time, when she would see her garden erupting into a mixing pot of colours. When Molly’s Grandmother past away she promised her Granddad to help take care of the garden and keep it the visual medley it was before her Grandmothers passing.

So since then every Saturday molly has packed up her Gardening gear into her Tulip Print backpack and ran of to her Granddads. Every time Molly arrives at the house and proceeds to skip joyfully to the Garden, the instant she sees the Water features and rainbows of colours continuously flowing around the wonderland, she takes a second to submit the pure mesmerisation of it all. After which she always glances and smiles at her Grandmothers remembrance stone, which is pride of place between the tulips and orchids, her Grandmothers favourite flowers. Molly then skips over the stepping stones, up the bridge and over the stream, and then she lays her things down under the hollow tree next to her Grandmothers shed. So every Saturday Molly completes the same routine. However this week as Molly is sat under the hollow tree putting on her wellington boots, a robin flies into the shed window and lands at Molly’s side. Molly picks up the discomforted bird and rushes over to the wishing well that’s located in front of the weeping tree. Molly leans over and dips her hand into the cool shimmering water. She then brushes over the bird’s feathers cleaning any bits of dirt or debris on the robin’s silky coat. Molly proceeds and places her new friend onto the bird house and feeds him some bird food. Whilst brushing over the birds coat Molly notices how shiny its colours are, “You must be a boy, my Grandmother always said that male robins have much shinier coats and you’re awfully shiny!” Molly said cheerfully. “I wonder what your name is. I’m going to call you Benjamin!” Molly shouted in an excited manner. “Well it looks like you’re going to be just fine Benjamin, by the way my name is” Just as molly was about to finish her sentence, her Granddad shouted from inside the house “Molly Mop! I’ve found that plant pot you were looking for!” Molly glanced into the house then looked back at Benjamin, “well I’d better go and get that off my granddad before he fills it with scrabble pieces, and claims it for himself!” Molly rushed into the house and collected the plant pot off her Granddad who was wrapping the furniture in Clingfilm. “Here you go Moppy! I it was under the sink I found it when I went for the Clingfilm!”  Molly slowly reached out and took the pot off her Granddad, who was stood there with his glasses on top of his head and his sleeves rolled up. “Thanks Granddad...........erm Granddad, what are you doing to the couch?” Molly asked as she looked up at her frantic granddad unravelling ridiculous amounts of cling film. Granddad Parker ripped off the final piece of the roll and lifted up the empty tube into the air. He began to wave the empty tube around as he began to speak “I’ve just got off the phone to your Aunty Mel and she and the kids are coming tomorrow evening for a week! Sadly your cousin Paul has a cold, but I will not let the little germs win, we are fit and healthy and they just won’t get us!” Molly looked up at her Granddad and smiled “Ok Granddad you battle those germs I’m going go fight the weeds” as molly ran out her Granddad began to unravel another roll of film for the rest of the furniture shouting “pro weed killer, that’s my girl! “

Molly rushed back out to see how her new friend Benjamin was doing but when she got back to the bird house he had gone. She continued to search around the Garden but couldn’t see her infrequent friend. Molly rushed over to her bag and took out some Lilly flower seeds, and began to scatter them into the pot she had got off her Granddad. She then went into the shed next to the hollow tree to get some soil. She placed the pot onto the wooden table in the centre of the room; the table was the feature item of the shed, grand in stature and complex in design. It had large wooden flowers carved onto it and was the envy of everyone that saw it. As she continued to fill up the pot with soil and at the same time mixing the seeds around, something caught her attention. The sun was shining through the window and highlighting a square cutting in the floor. It seemed to be a small trap  door, however the handle had been removed. Molly with plant pot in hand kneeled down to investigate; she took out her small spade and pushed its handle into the hole where the door knob should be. She slowly pulled up the door and placed her spade into the front pocket of her dungarees. She pulled the door right open and leant down into the gap.

Critique:Good story and you left the reader wanting more, for shore. What did Molly find and how does this relate to the story. Was it money, was it a new plant or was it a part of Molly's memory left by her grandmother. Something that would touch Molly's heart. You left us readers inquisitive, hope to read more.

Grade:Good
