A Blue Rose Song

Upon a deep blue rose, a scented song,

so delicate of harmony and sweet;

a melody whose strains of love replete

I mused upon; to whom could it belong?

To hear such ballad ought have felt so wrong,

though its existence I could ne'er delete;

each note an echo of my own heart's beat,

alluring me to drift and sing along.

Alas, I wish I'd never found the rose

whose music stirred such restlessness in me;

where once dreams blossomed, only sorrow grows

from searching for a love that cannot be

and timelessly a tear-blue river flows

'midst yearnings destined ne'er to be set free.

~ Italian Sonnet - the blue rose does not exist in nature, in
some cultures it signifies a never ending quest for the impossible.
