A Soul's Journey

My writer’s soul is parched

Stranded in a barren desert

Nothing to see…

Nothing to hear…

Nothing to feel…

But sand—

Dancing to a song

that only it can hear.

Inspired I am not

Desperate, my soul

Grabs a handful of the fine grains

And puts it near my ear,

Willing me to hear what it says…

At a loss I am

Frustrated, I fling

the miniscule silica beads

away from me

But the wind sends it back—

stinging my eyes

I watch where it goes

and follow Wind’s path

On a quest I am

As I walked the arid land,

the relentless heat

dries up my soul even more

My fountain of inspiration

further

evaporating

I stop my journey

Exhausted now I am

Once rested, I open my eyes

A Miracle!

My thirst will be quenched

The second I reach that Oasis

Running…—

Stumbling…—

Crawling…—

towards nothing

Temporary jubilance

Fooled I am

   Crying, haunting winds

                            Gathering sand as it goes,

                            then tossing it away

                                 Chaos in the desert—

my soul almost lost in it

                                 Fleeting sands

                                                of time,

    thoughts

                                            and dreams

Hounding

then

abandoning

 me

Confounded I am

Gold to orange to pink to purple to black

Desolation at its finest.

But Hope flickers

in the lights

of the countless stars

that gently dust the night sky.

Mesmerized now I am

Hoping stars fill my soul instead of sand—

I look up,

And begin to drink in the beauty

Taking in all that I can

Satiated bit by bit

Alas! Not seeing the patch

of quicksand—

Slipping now I am

Quicksand in the desert?

 Apparently so.

  Trapped, smothered in grit

   Afraid of sinking

I try not to flail, but fail

      So I keep falling,

                           falling,

                                  falling…

  In

  an

  Abyss

  now

  I

  am

Frightened, not knowing when

or where it stops

I breathe deeply

to relax and collect my soul

The sand now seems to aggregate,

forming a tunnel

that leads to a labyrinth

Of dreams,

            thoughts,

and

                                                 memories

Focused now I am

As I go through the maze,

I see Life all around me

And imbibe it.

Strengthened,

 I search for the exit

And succeed

Finding the bright white light

that marks it

                                                                    Running—!

                                                                      Leaping—!

                                                                                                  Flying—!

Towards Something

CReaTiVe ExPloSion!

Stimulated now I am!

I thrust the door open to Paradise

                   Everything to See!

 Everything to Hear!

                                                Everything to Feel!

The sand that I followed

happily embraced

by an

Ocean

that drenches

 my Writer’s Soul

Inspired now I am!

The sand now sings—

My Soul listens:

Each memory

Each thought

Each dream

Each moment in time

Each heartbeat

Each Life

is a grain of Sand

It is all up to you where you take it

Enlightened, I gingerly pick up

a handful of the fine grains

and am Awestruck

Never knowing until now

What it really meant—

that Sand is all

That Has Been,

That Is

and

That Will Be

No wonder it is countless…

…and what about Stars?

They are but grains of sand that sparkle—

Heaven’s counterparts of our lives.

A new Journey is at hand for my Soul.

And I have written this to commence it...

Critique:I was impressed reading your poem. A lot of deep thought went into this write. You go from absolute nothingness, desolate, barren, then climb to a point where one finds their soul and new aspirations to live. Nice job getting your reader there too. Dennis

Critique:Hi Raenie. I really like this but I'm worn out from reading it!! (thats a compliment btw). I feel like I did that journey, a desperate journey across a barren landscape, trying to find direction. The ending is beautiful. The writing style does help to draw you into the mood of the poem. ........"sand is all that has been" - I've often wondered while sitting on the beach, sifting sand through my fingers just what history it holds. Great write Raenie, I voted for this as a spotlight writing.

Critique:Very interesting write. I could almost see the wind blown sand going across my face. Feel the wind blowing on my back. Great style that you use here. Wasn't at all hard for me to read but added to the effect you were wanting. To imitate the dunes of the dessert. great job! ~Ron~
